Sprinklers for the 18th Fairway - February 2005

Installation of the new sprinkling system for the 18th fairway occurred on the week of the 21st to 25th February - the hole was shortened for play for 4 days as the Akarana Ground staff worked on digging the deep drains required for the pipes and electronics that will allow for the placement of sprinklers, keeping the course in top nick throughout the year. Work was slowed once we realised how much rock there was under the ground, but all was back to normal within 7 days. The fairway will now be reseeded to repair the turf on the drain lines. Please treat all drain lines as GUR.

A pat on the back to Steve and the boys for a job well done - Akarana members will appreciate the work and investment during those warm summer months to come....

Drenches had to be at least 500mm deep to allow for fairway coring in the future.

The start of the fairway was almost all rock!

More rock!

When you strike rock, you need a big digger!

Time to remove another rock!

Our greenkeepers know how to make a big mess at times...

Trainee Greenkeeper Dave Mahoney installs an inspection chamber to a control valve.

Dave finally starts to lay the sprinklers.

Dave again - with more rock!

Trainee Greenkeeper Gareth Hitchcock fills the last controlling valve box.

Gareth places a sprinkler in front of the 18th green.

And the rocks kept coming.

If I see another rock again I'll be off for a Bob's Ham on the Bone special to calm down...

The wiring and valve that runs each section of the fairway sprinkler system.

The clean up begins...

And the finished product!
