Midweek Ladies St Patrick’s Day Celebrations
We certainly fielded a variety of greens, from emerald to lime…. St Pat would have been thrilled with our eclectic mix! With our sparkling Shamrock dressed tables and our somewhat potent Green Cocktails and delicious Green Cake, and Irish music jiggling along in the background one couldn’t help but feel that a leprechaun might pop up any moment and one almost did….but no it was Cynthia making a late entrance! Jill and Diane look like they are in cahoots over the mixing of the drinks. And what a lovely bunch of green over 30 something’s we all look!!! Special thanks to the Ladies Committee for another fun day.
We had three hidden holes lowest gross in two divisions and the winners were Louise Hubert in Silver and Heather Johnson in Bronze. J J Lee won the Lucky Draw and the goodies in the raffle were also all green!

Akarana Teams going along well at this early stage. If you get a chance to go along to any of the games please do as the girls would really appreciate the support. Some of the clubs get out there in force to support their teams.
9 holers
This year has started well for the group of 57. We were well represented at the Auckland District Open Day and two of our members won prizes. Well done Sulochana and Sue. We are looking forward to our Open Day at Akarana on the 6th April where the theme will be yellow. All sorts of things are coming in for raffles so it should be good fun, a good lunch and good golf |

Tuesday 27 January 09 – Ladies Opening Day
It was great to see so many turn out for Opening Day, favourite holiday attire was the theme of the day and was won by Cynthia Bottomley, the glasses did it!
The Opening Day Plate was won by Trish Strand and Heather Johnson with a nett 72.5 with runners up Hyo Lee and Monica Wang with a nett 73.5 Our 9 hole lady winners were Marlene Moyle and Kay Adams with a nett 74, well done all!
After endless days of sun, rain was predicted but held off however the greens were very fast….so fast that only one person managed to land on the 3rd green and stay on it! Congratulations to Joy Han closest to the pin on the 3rd and Margaret Oppelt on the 8th.
Congratulations also to our new caterer who gave us a delicious buffet lunch and the tables looked great with island flowers and the Hawaiian music made us feel like we’d just been transported! |

Hamper Day – Tuesday 25 November
A great turn out on a gorgeous day for Greensome Foursomes Pairs, won with a terrific score by Cynthia Bottomley and Joyce Smith. But it turned out to be Margaret-Ann Stewart’s day with a Hole-in-One on the 16th, this being her second this year! There were a few surprises……as we came off the course we were welcomed by two of Santa’s helpers with Christmas Carols on the First Tee, Champagne and Christmas Mince Pies. Our raffle table looked a picture with the Christmas gifts and more of Santa’s helpers had decorated the club house and the dining tables looked beautiful. There were Christmas prizes for all but wait there’s more…..just as we settled into some good old carol singing after lunch the stereo kicked in and ‘The Village People’ arrived to give us a fantastic (and somewhat hilarious) version of YMCA! Well done The Ladies Committee.
Closing Day - Tuesday 18 November
4BBB Stablefords Pairs was the play of the day won convincingly by Heather Wray and Heather Johnson followed by Annual Prize Giving, congratulations to all prize winners.
Akarana Ladies Mystery Trip - Tuesday 10 Nov 08
An early start for 38 ladies departing the club car park by bus at 7.30am to……The Lakes Resort Pauanui!

Fun on the bus included our driver Chris trying to convince us we were playing at the Hauraki Club but after a lovely welcome it was our toilet stop and Janet Boddy had a surprise guest to keep her company……George as in Clooney I think his name was! A raffle kept us occupied with a wonderful Christmas cake as 1st prize (made by Shirley) and was won by Joyce Smith and the prizes kept coming.
A fun golf quiz was cleverly won by Margaret Oppelt in a play-off with Jude James…and yes John Key definitely does live in Parnell! Before we knew it we were there and welcomed with drinks and Christmas Mince Pies and then it was out on the course. The overall winners on the day with Best Stablefords were Lynette Alack Silver Division and Jill Hodgson Bronze Division. There were lots of other prizes including one for the most lost balls….Penny Woods lost 6! We enjoyed a ‘bag’ lunch in our carts during the round followed by drinks and prize-giving before boarding our bus and having a ‘sing a long’ all the way home. Thanks to Margaret for her great guitar and ukulele playing.
A great day was had by all with requests to return in 09 to The Lakes……..One thing the Ladies Committee can say on that is that ‘it will all be a mystery’! |
9 holers
2008 ended well for the 9 hole women. At the end of November we celebrated our prizegiving with Jenny Levick being our Club Champ for 2008.
This was followed a week later with Hamper Day, a gift for everyone, wine and Christmas cake and the drawing of our raffle which was won by Robin Howe.
Our Christmas lunch was held at Cornwall Park Restaurant, and was attended by our Club Captain Shirley Shadbolt, and the midweek Vice Captain Diane Rackham, and was enjoyed by everyone |

On Fiji time (26th August 2008)
Many of our 9-hole members joined with others from Howick, Titirangi and Northland on a recent trip to Fiji.

A wonderful time was had by all with sun and sand to order. Not only was golf on the agenda but cruising the islands, sampling the local fare and meeting new friends were highlights.
You GO girls! |
Pimms Cup 2008. (Apr 23 2008)
Pimm’s Cup, 36 hole 4BBB competition where traditionally participating clubs have a qualifying competition to find their representatives. This year we extended the invitation to include the Women’s Club Captain and her guest, and 9 of the 15 participating clubs took up the offer.
Thursday 17th April, 2008, the forecast was for heavy showers with possible thunderstorms in the afternoon. Not quite what we had hoped for the 51st Pimm’s Cup.
Arriving at the club at 7am, the sky was overcast and grey, it was drizzling with rain and it looked like the forecast was, for once, correct. The first tee time was 7:30 and we tee’d off with wet weather gear on and umbrellas at the ready. Two holes later the sky had cleared, the sun was out and the wet weather gear was duly relegated to our bags for the rest of the day. The Golf Gods were certainly with us!!
36 holes later and the field of 37 pairs were in the clubhouse awaiting the results of this prestigious competition. The 2008 winners were the representatives from Pakuranga, Jenny Chen and Mindy Teng with a fantastic 91 points. Runners up were Akarana’s own Rachel Heatley and Mandy Zimmerli. Congratulations to all our winners and we look forward to seeing you next year.
Thanks go to everyone who worked behind the scenes to make this a successful day and to Cleveland Golf for 1st and 5th prizes.

The 9 hole women's committee enjoying a relaxing drink after a most successful Open Day on 17th March.
Fifty-three women from ten clubs competed. Akarana members won more than their share of prizes!
The committee carried the theme of St Patrick's day through the day by wearing green headgear, green bows on the prizes and shamrocks scattered liberally on the tables at lunchtime. St Patrick also helped by producing a perfect summer day!
