February 2014
Hello everyone
Well that's Christmas and New Year done and dusted and a quick glance at the calendar shows that we're well into the swing of things for another busy, fun filled, exciting, enjoyable year of golf at Akarana.
By the time you read this, all the January trophies and vouchers have been presented and possibly spent and everyone has had the opportunity to join in at one of our Opening days.
The Auckland Anniversary tournament once again enjoyed an impressive number of competitors and the car park was still full, well after the presentations were complete. To those that volunteered their eyes, hands and presence, the club says, thank you.
After a well-earned rest, our Vice Captains and Convenor have returned ready to work through our busy, entertaining and challenging calendar, whilst keeping an eye on the many other events scheduled around the region. To Maree Lawson, Barbara Jepson, Barbara O'Connor and each of your committees, we all say thank you, in advance. And when / should things get a ‘little' difficult, please refer to the applause you received when you were elected and may that keep you energised.
Our Pennant convenors have been in touch with each player to remind them of the year ahead. Teams have been organised to best represent our club to ensure the successes we have enjoyed in the last couple of years was really a sign of things to come and not merely a flash in the pan. Our new uniforms have already captured the eye of many an opposition and some performances, will have some clubs keeping a close watch on our teams. To our convenors Aseri Meikle, Rae Riggir, Fiona Caldwell, Ena Robertson, Dixie Horne, Pru Bower, Janet Boddy and Sinead Keaney, thank you for the work you have ‘signed up' for, either again or for the first time. Know that there are many hands, happy to help.
Auckland Golf are currently looking through the playing results in order to select representatives for the Auckland region. All the best to those that have put their names forward.
So, now into our year. To our ladies that have moved to another category, be it Weekend, Weekday or 9 Holes, I'm sure you have been made to feel welcome. Making light work of the transition from 9 Holes to Weekday ladies is Lindy Edwards with a nett score of 64 to win the Bronze LGU for February and the silver winner with 72 is Alicia Butler. You both have an appointment for the Gold Button on either Tuesday 28 October or Saturday 1 November.
We are once again hosting the Pimms Cup tournament. This historic trophy has been part of the Auckland Golf schedule for 63 years and whilst many of the winners have come from Akarana, there have been years when other clubs have raised the trophy. The entry forms are displayed at the club, please contact our pro shop to enter.
In April, we will be hosting a Charles Tour event. This is a fantastic opportunity for Akarana and we hope that many hands will be available to ensure that our visitors enjoy the hospitality that is Akarana. Keep an eye out for the updates.
The Carpet fund continues to make steady progress and with the funds we've been promised, it is hoped that the clubroom colour scheme will be updated sooner, rather than later. One thing that can be enjoyed now are photos of some of our winning Pennant teams, taking pride of place in the club rooms.
Coming up in March, we launch straight into the Home Links events.
The best scores for each competition is compared with the results from the region and the rest of the country. Your golf programme has the dates and the events.
Play well everyone and we'll see you on the tee
