In the end, it was closer than expected, but Josh Geary was a deserved winner of the inaugural Recreational Services Akarana Open. He would have been eyeing Ryan Fox as his only possible challenger at the start of the day, but rookie pro Peter Lee nearly flew under the radar with a fast finishing 64 in the wet and testing conditions at Akarana.
The predicted rain finally arrived after the leaders had completed 7 holes, causing an 80 minute delay. Rain radar maps indicated a difficult if not wetter afternoon, but a mass of club volunteers were able to squeegee the greens back into playable condition to enable the 54 holes to be completed. This epitomised an outstanding effort by the Akarana Club to not only stage this addition to the Charles Tour in a few short months, but present it to a standard that will have the players talking about it for months to come. Congratulations Josh Geary, and well done Akarana!Click here for NZ Golf website
