Our Member Hostdave-izzard

Name: Dave Izzard

Age: (Rude expletive)

Occupation: Self employed.

Nickname: Izzy (just as well he’s not a blonde)

Handicap: Around 3

Background: Came to NZ from England when he was only 3 years old. Joined the golf club in his teenage years. A product of 70’s golf, Dave’s substantial talent quickly found him playing for the Auckland under-21 team. Then he discovered sex drugs and rock and roll and has been a chopper ever since. Made a brief comeback in 1994 to win the Senior Club Championships and is threatening to play Bissett Shield golf in 2006.

Finest Hour in Golf: Beating the legendary Vic Pirihi in the ’94 final.

Most Embarrassing Moment in Golf: Rumoured to have been sighted practising with Ladies clubs.

Hobbies: Going to the gym, music and now mountainbiking.

Anything Else? Can wiggle ears and juggle. Yes but can he do both at the same time?

The finishing hole and many say the golf course’s best hole, the 18th will always decide your state of mind post game. On paper not a hard hole but ask any player whose match has gone down the last and this hole can be harder than week old scone.

Our ‘get the Bissett Shield’ mastermind, Dave Izzard, has had plenty of games go down the 18th with many stories to tell both good and bad. He also used to eat plenty of scones but the new Dave is now a shadow of his former self and inspiring others to do the same. Being the nurturing golfer that he is, Dave will happily discuss strategies for leaving the 18th feeling better than if you’d just had a full Devonshire Tea.

“Ah the 18th, the last chance to hit that perfect drive to ‘bring you back next time’. But in saying that the driver may not be the best option. Maybe a long iron or one of those (Craig Burton’s even got one), rescue clubs. There are trees left and right easily in range for a wayward drive. The iron option will leave you between a seven and nine to the target. A figure eight shaped green with tight middle and heavy bunkering means any pin placement must be respected. Wind also plays a factor here when playing the short irons. My advice, finish with a birdie in the hand because it’s better than two in the bush. The beer will taste much sweeter in the 19th afterwards."

Now that’s advice we could all use.

Homeward bound - the figure 8 shaped 18th green with 3 bunkers ready to gobble up the wayward approach shot.
Early 2005 and the 18th fairway had a new sprinkler system installed - click here for the story.
Day at the Beach - Is Izzy preparing for some bunker action? Or is he puckering up for some of that Akarana lovin?
