Born Auckland 1948. Wesley Primary, Wesley Intermediate, Mt Roskill Grammar - (with John Hart!)
Mens hairdresser - started with Paul Arthur in 1964.
Called 'Barber' at the golf club and 'Sport' at the Softball Club & by family.
Lowest handicap 15, highest 26, average about 17. 2 years on the committee, 2 years House Committee Chairman, 2 years Chairman of Twilight Golf.
Happily married to Colleen for 32 years. 2 daughters: Megan & Deanna.
Have been a barber most of my life and also spent 30 years in softball, both playing and administration. Highlights - being on the organising committee of the 1985 Womens World Series and Co-Chairman of the 1993 Under 19 Youth World Series.
Started playing golf in 1996 and have since spent quite a lot of time at Akarana.
Best highlight - winning the Watson Trophy in 1993. Worst - losing the Watson Trophy to the late Neville Scott 9-10.

We've all heard his friendly voice booming out at Twilight golf prizegiving (all the more booming since we installed the new sound system! - ed). He's one of our favourite characters and we asked him to share his views on Akarana's shortest, but certainly not easiest, holes - the 5th.

"I guess the best way to start is to say that since the golf course had gone under such a big and wonderful transformation is that the golf Pro Shop now sells 2-3 times as many golf balls in the last 2 years compared to the previous 2 years, with many golfers showing despair as yet another ball goes into the lakes.

Take the par 3 5th hole for example. It is no. 12 stroke hole, 157 metres from an elevated tee. I would normally use either a 5-iron or a 5-wood. The problem being a creek to cross at 100 metres. In front of the green on the left and right are 2 bunkers. Immediately to the right of the green is a large lake. On the left hand side of the green there is a path - hit that and the ball just fires onto the 6th fairway. And just behind the green is yet another bunker. Added to this, even if you make the green, you can often be left with a 20-30 metre putt.

Any time I walk off hole 5 with a 4 for 2 points, I'm a happy man!".

FINAL WORD - "Enjoy Akarana, enjoy your golf and if I can play the game, anyone can (to quote Michael Campbell)!"

"If only they had this service at Akarana!" - Noel enjoys being spoilt at a recent visit to Thailand.

The lads at Torque Multimedia who manage this great website created this sensational 3D flyover of the 5th hole. It's like being Darren the Duck coming into land in the lake! Click here to view the Flash Flyby (200kb file size)

Happy Days - yes, that smart lad in the middle (or is it muddle) is our Noel back in 1964 posing for a Herald picture.
